Where it came from
Published by Marvel Comics in 1977, the 2001: A Space Odyssey series was an ambitious adaptation written and illustrated by Jack Kirby. The project originated from Kirby's desire to expand upon the themes and imagery of Stanley Kubrick’s seminal 1968 film, resulting in a series that merged the original cinematic narrative with Kirby’s signature cosmic sensibilities and sprawling, mythic storytelling style.
Issue number six continues Kirby's exploration of human evolution and the influence of the Monolith, showcasing his distinctively dynamic panel layouts and intense, imaginative character designs. While initially met with curiosity by fans of the film, the series has since been recognized as a unique curio in Marvel’s history, celebrated for Kirby's creative freedom and the bold, surreal visuals that characterized his late-1970s output.
