A Starlit Darkness #1

A Starlit Darkness #1, published in 2021 by IDW Publishing, serves as the debut issue of a gothic horror limited series written by Stephanie Phillips and illustrated by Craig Cermak. The narrative centers on a reimagining of historical events surrounding the 1930s Paris World's Fair, blending elements of the supernatural with architectural mystery. It was conceived as a atmospheric, period-specific thriller that explores the dark secrets buried beneath the spectacle of the exposition.

The creative direction focused on a muted, moody color palette and detailed linework to evoke the feeling of pre-war Europe. Craig Cermak’s art was specifically intended to capture the imposing scale of Art Deco structures, contrasting the grandeur of the setting against the protagonist's personal isolation. Upon its release, the series was generally received as a stylistic departure for the publisher, noted for its strong commitment to tone and its focus on a self-contained, claustrophobic narrative arc.
