Where it came from
Published in 1989 as part of the DC Comics annual program, Action Comics Annual #2 serves as a significant chapter in the post-Crisis on Infinite Earths era of Superman. The issue was crafted to expand the scope of the character’s mythos during a period when writers were actively redefining Superman's origins and his relationship with the supporting cast of Metropolis.
The issue is particularly noted for its contribution to the deeper lore of the series, featuring creative work that leaned into the darker, more introspective tone popularized in late 1980s comics. It was received as a solid companion to the monthly Action Comics title, offering a standalone narrative experience that satisfied readers looking for more substantial storytelling beyond the standard twenty-two-page format.
