Where it came from
Action Comics Weekly #601, released in May 1988, marked a pivotal and experimental shift for DC Comics. Following the 50th anniversary of Superman, the publisher transitioned their flagship title from a monthly comic book into a weekly anthology format. This change was designed to revitalize the series by featuring rotating serials starring characters like Green Lantern, Blackhawk, and Deadman, while relegated Superman to a recurring short story rather than the primary focus of the issue.
The transition was overseen by editor Mike Carlin and featured contributions from various creators, including writers like Roger Stern and artists like Dave Gibbons, who handled the Green Lantern segments. The reception among the readership was mixed; while the anthology format allowed for diverse storytelling, long-time fans found the departure from a dedicated Superman-centric title jarring. The weekly experiment lasted less than a year before Action Comics returned to its traditional monthly format with issue #642.
