Action Comics Weekly #628

Action Comics Weekly #628 was published in late 1988 as part of an experimental anthology format for DC Comics' flagship title. During this period, the publisher transitioned the historically solo-superhero book into a weekly serial, featuring a rotating cast of characters including Green Lantern, Black Canary, and Deadman. This shift reflected a broader industry attempt in the late 1980s to increase engagement through frequent, episodic storytelling, moving away from the traditional monthly single-narrative structure.

The issue features artwork and narrative contributions consistent with the established house style of the era, prioritizing high-action sequences and collaborative creative teams. Reception of the weekly experiment was polarized; while the format allowed for diverse character spotlights, many readers expressed frustration with the inconsistent tone and the absence of a long-form Superman narrative. Consequently, the series eventually returned to its monthly format, making this issue a representative artifact of a bold, temporary shift in the DC publishing strategy.
