Action Comics Weekly #626

Action Comics Weekly #626 was published in 1988 during a brief but ambitious period for DC Comics, in which the long-running Superman anthology title was transformed into a weekly anthology format. This shift was intended to provide a platform for serialized storytelling across the DC Universe, featuring a rotating cast of characters including Green Lantern, Deadman, and Black Canary, rather than focusing solely on the Man of Steel. The format reflected the industry's experimental era of the late eighties, seeking to maintain reader engagement through consistent, bite-sized weekly installments.

The issue features artwork and writing contributions from various creators, consistent with the anthology's collaborative editorial approach led by Mike Carlin. The design and narrative direction aimed to modernize these classic characters for a more mature comic audience, emphasizing grit and complex subplots. While the weekly format was bold, it was ultimately short-lived, as the logistics of weekly production and shifting market trends eventually led the publisher to return the series to its traditional monthly Superman-centric publication schedule.
