Where it came from
Action Comics Weekly #639, released in February 1989, represents the final installment of a bold, year-long experiment by DC Comics to transform their flagship title, Action Comics, into a weekly anthology format. This shift was intended to revitalize the brand by providing a rapid-fire showcase for diverse characters including Green Lantern, Blackhawk, and Deadman, moving away from the traditional monthly single-character focus.
The issue features a cover by Jerry Ordway and interior work from creators like Roger Stern and Curt Swan. By the time of this 639th issue, the weekly format had begun to struggle with reader attrition and logistical challenges, leading DC to return the series to its roots as a monthly Superman-centric comic shortly after. It remains a significant historical marker for 1980s industry trends and the evolution of the serialized comic book medium.
