Where it came from
Action Comics Weekly #638 was released in 1989 during a unique experimental phase for DC Comics. Following the 600th issue of the long-running series, the publisher pivoted to a weekly anthology format, featuring serialized adventures of various characters rather than a single lead story starring Superman. This issue stands as a late entry in that experiment, reflecting the industry's attempt at the time to mimic the pacing of weekly newsstand periodicals.
The issue features work from a rotating stable of creators common to the weekly format. The design and narrative direction were overseen by editors attempting to maintain continuity across multiple short-form stories. While the anthology experiment is remembered for its ambition, it was met with mixed reactions from readers who missed the traditional monthly Superman focus, eventually leading DC to revert the title to a monthly format shortly thereafter.
