Where it came from
Advanced Dungeons & Dragons #18, published by DC Comics in August 1989, arrived during a period when the publisher held the license to translate the popular tabletop role-playing game into monthly comic book narratives. This specific issue features a script by Dan Mishkin and artwork by Jan Duursema, a creative team well-regarded for their contributions to the series’ fantasy world-building and character development.
The comic was designed to expand the lore of the Forgotten Realms campaign setting, aiming to capture the high-fantasy adventure and tactical complexity associated with TSR's gaming manuals. While the comic line served to broaden the reach of the Dungeons & Dragons brand beyond the gaming table, it faced the inherent challenge of adapting a non-linear game experience into episodic storytelling, ultimately becoming a nostalgic touchstone for collectors of late-eighties fantasy media.
