All-Star Squadron #49

All-Star Squadron was launched by DC Comics in 1981, conceived by writer Roy Thomas to showcase characters from the Golden Age of comics within the established modern continuity of the DC Universe. Set primarily during World War II, the series sought to reconcile the historical adventures of the Justice Society of America and the All-Star Squadron with the evolving history of the publisher's multiverse. By the time issue number 49 was published in 1985, the series was approaching the culmination of the major Crisis on Infinite Earths event, which significantly altered the status of these legacy characters.

Issue 49 features cover art and interior work consistent with the series' collaborative style, often highlighting the expansive roster of heroes typical of Thomas's historical narratives. As the title neared its conclusion, the focus remained on the interplay between wartime heroics and the editorial mandates of the mid-eighties. The title was well-regarded by readers who appreciated the meticulous attention to continuity and the deep-cut references to the 1940s origins of the superhero genre.
