Where it came from
Amazing X-Men #3 was released in 2014 as part of the overarching Marvel NOW! publishing initiative, which sought to revitalize and streamline the X-Men franchise following the events of the Avengers vs. X-Men crossover. This specific issue is part of the story arc involving the team's quest to retrieve the soul of Nightcrawler from the afterlife, a narrative arc designed to address fan demand for the character's return to the primary continuity.
The issue features writing by Jason Aaron and interior artwork by Ed McGuinness, who was chosen for his distinct, dynamic, and muscular style that defined the visual language of the series. The collaboration was intended to marry the high-stakes emotional weight of Nightcrawler's resurrection with the energetic, blockbuster aesthetic common to Marvel's flagship mutant titles during this period, ultimately receiving generally favorable reviews for balancing humor with classic X-Men themes.
