Where it came from
Published by DC Comics in July 1980, Aquaman #70 represents the final issue of the character's first self-titled ongoing series. This era of the series is noted for its transition into a shorter format within the 'Adventure Comics' anthology title shortly thereafter, marking the end of a long-running Silver and Bronze Age chapter for the King of Atlantis. The comic was crafted during a period where DC was re-evaluating the commercial viability of its secondary tier of superhero titles.
The issue features cover art and interior work characteristic of the late Bronze Age house style, often involving collaborative efforts from DC's established stable of creators during that transitionary year. At the time of release, Aquaman was undergoing shifts in narrative tone as creators attempted to modernize the character's aquatic mythology to better align with the increasingly complex storytelling standards of the early 1980s.
