Where it came from
Aquaman #1, published in 1962, marked the character's graduation from a long-standing backup feature in Adventure Comics to his own self-titled series. This transition came as DC Comics sought to capitalize on the character's growing popularity during the Silver Age of comic books, positioning him as a standalone hero with a revitalized mythos that expanded his underwater kingdom and supporting cast.
The issue was illustrated by Nick Cardy, a legendary artist known for his dynamic, clean lines and fluid storytelling, which were essential for depicting the aquatic environments of the series. Cardy’s work on this inaugural issue established the visual identity for the title, balancing the high-stakes heroics of the surface world with the intricate, otherworldly design of Atlantis that defined the series for years to come.
