Archie #1

Archie #1 was published in the winter of 1942 by MLJ Magazines, a company that would later become Archie Comics. Created by publisher John L. Goldwater, editor Vic Bloom, and artist Bob Montana, the comic was designed to capitalize on the popularity of wholesome, relatable teen culture during the mid-twentieth century. The character of Archie Andrews was inspired by the real-life antics of the youth in the post-Depression era, aiming to provide a comedic and lighthearted contrast to the superhero comics that dominated the market at the time.

Bob Montana, the primary artist for the early issues, played a crucial role in establishing the iconic visual identity of the Riverdale cast. His style was characterized by a clean, approachable aesthetic that grounded the absurdity of Archie's romantic entanglements in a recognizable suburban reality. Upon its release, the comic was met with immediate commercial success, resonating with a wide audience and cementing Archie's status as a quintessential American cultural icon that would endure for decades.
