Avalon #1

Avalon #1, published by Image Comics in 1996, emerged during the peak of the independent comics boom that followed the founding of Image. The series was created and illustrated by Jim Cheung, who sought to blend traditional high-fantasy tropes with the stylized, kinetic aesthetic that defined the publisher's house style during the nineties. It was conceived as an ambitious expansion of the Image universe, aiming to provide a grounded, darker take on Arthurian mythos for an audience shifting toward edgier, creator-owned narratives.

The reception of the title reflected the era's focus on high-impact visual design and character-driven storytelling. Cheung’s art, characterized by detailed linework and dramatic anatomical poses, was instrumental in establishing the book's identity as a premium visual experience. While the series captured a specific moment in comic book history characterized by experimental world-building and the cult of the superstar artist, it remains a notable example of the creative freedom Image offered its roster of illustrators during its formative years.
