Where it came from
Avalon, published by Caliber Comics in the mid-1990s, was part of a wave of independent dark fantasy and gothic-themed titles that flourished in the era’s alternative comic book market. The series focused on atmospheric storytelling, blending mythological motifs with a contemporary, often gritty aesthetic typical of the independent scene's attempt to diversify away from traditional superhero tropes.
The creative direction for the series prioritized moody illustration and expansive world-building, aiming to attract readers who favored high-fantasy themes grounded in mature narrative arcs. While the series did not reach the commercial heights of mainstream publisher tentpoles, it remains a notable example of the creative freedom afforded to independent creators during the 1990s comics boom, characterized by its distinctive artistic vision and commitment to its niche genre.
