Where it came from
Báijīn Zhōngjú, known in English-language circles as Platinum End, emerged from the collaborative efforts of writer Tsugumi Ohba and illustrator Takeshi Obata. Launched in 2015, the series was designed as a dark fantasy thriller following the duo's previous acclaimed works. Issue 4 serves as a critical juncture in the narrative, continuing the tense supernatural competition where thirteen candidates vie to become the next god of humanity, emphasizing themes of nihilism and moral ambiguity.
The character design and visual direction, spearheaded by Obata, utilize a clean, sharp aesthetic that contrasts the mundane urban settings of Japan with the ethereal, often grotesque appearance of the angels. Upon its serial release in Jump Square, the series received significant attention due to the creators' pedigree, though it sparked varied discourse regarding its bleak narrative tone and the philosophical questions it posed about human value and salvation.
