Báijīn Zhōngjú #5

Báijīn Zhōngjú, translated as Platinum End, emerged from the collaborative vision of writer Tsugumi Ohba and illustrator Takeshi Obata. Following their successful partnerships on Death Note and Bakuman, the creative duo launched this series in Shueisha's Jump Square magazine in late 2015. The narrative serves as a dark fantasy exploration of existentialism, centered on a high school student forced into a contest to determine the next deity of the world.

The aesthetic of issue #5 reflects Takeshi Obata’s characteristic precision and sophisticated line work, which emphasizes the grim, architectural nature of the urban settings and the intricate designs of the celestial beings. Upon its release, the series was received as a provocative addition to the shonen demographic, frequently praised for its complex moral dilemmas and challenging thematic depth, even as critics debated its bleak tone and pacing compared to the creators' earlier works.
