Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #183

Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #183 was published in 2004 as part of the ongoing anthology series that debuted in 1989. The title was originally conceived to provide a platform for top-tier creators to tell standalone, out-of-continuity stories focused on the early years of Bruce Wayne's career. By the time this issue was released, the series had established itself as a home for experimental narratives that explored the psychological depth of the character away from the constraints of the main monthly continuity.

This specific issue features the beginning of a story arc titled 'Warhammer,' written by Harlan Ellison and Ron Foster, with artwork by Gene Ha. Ellison, a legendary science fiction writer, brought a distinct, high-concept approach to the script, while Gene Ha's detailed, moody illustration style was intended to evoke the gritty atmosphere central to the Dark Knight's persona. The collaboration was noted by readers for its dense narrative style, reflecting the series' recurring focus on blending mature storytelling themes with traditional superhero iconography.
