Where it came from
Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #60, titled 'Going Sane', was published in June 1994 as part of a series intended to explore the formative years of the Batman mythos. This specific issue serves as the conclusion to a notable arc written by J.M. DeMatteis and illustrated by Joe Staton, which examines the psychological aftermath for the Joker after he mistakenly believes he has successfully killed Batman.
The creative team aimed to delve into the codependency between the hero and his primary antagonist, exploring a reality where the Joker attempts to assimilate into society following the presumed death of his rival. Upon its release, the story was well-received by critics and readers alike for its mature thematic approach and its departure from standard action-oriented narrative structures, cementing its place as a classic psychological character study within the wider DC catalog.
