Where it came from
Batman: Shadow of the Bat #25 was released in March 1994 as part of the wider Knightquest: The Search storyline. Following the events of Knightfall, in which Bruce Wayne was incapacitated by Bane, Jean-Paul Valley took up the mantle of Batman. This issue chronicles his erratic and increasingly violent transformation, reflecting a editorial shift toward the darker, more aggressive anti-hero archetypes popular in 1990s comics.
The issue was written by Alan Grant, a long-time architect of the Batman mythos, with art provided by Bret Blevins. Blevins’ expressive, sometimes distorted stylistic approach was utilized to visually convey the deteriorating mental state of Valley under the influence of the 'System.' The creative team sought to emphasize the psychological strain of the new, militarized Batman, a departure from the traditional detective-focused characterization that had defined the title since its inception in 1992.
