Where it came from
Batman: Shadow of the Bat #31, released in 1994, is a chapter within the sprawling 'Knightquest: The Search' storyline. Following the events of 'Knightfall,' where Bruce Wayne was incapacitated by Bane, Jean-Paul Valley assumed the mantle of Batman. This issue serves to explore the psychological fractures of Valley’s increasingly violent and unstable tenure as the Dark Knight, reflecting the grim, high-stakes tone pervasive in mid-nineties DC comics.
The issue features writing by Alan Grant, a long-time architect of the Batman mythos who was instrumental in defining the tone of the Shadow of the Bat series. The artwork, provided by Bret Blevins, utilizes the expressive, slightly exaggerated style common to the era's storytelling. The series was designed to offer a more focused, often darker character study than the flagship Batman titles, emphasizing the internal struggles of its protagonists against the backdrop of a decaying Gotham City.
