Where it came from
Batman: Shadow of the Bat #32, published in November 1994, is a part of the expansive 'Knightfall' era of DC Comics lore. Following the departure of the central Batman title's focus on Jean-Paul Valley as the new, violent Batman, this series explored the darker, psychological ramifications of Bruce Wayne's absence and the city's reaction to an increasingly brutal vigilante. This specific issue features the writing of Alan Grant and the distinct, moody artwork of Bret Blevins.
The creative team aimed to emphasize the creeping madness of the era, focusing on the internal conflict between the myth of Batman and the man wielding the mantle. Bret Blevins utilized heavy shadows and stark lines, a hallmark of the series' aesthetic, to reflect the grim atmosphere of 1990s Gotham. The issue was received as a standard entry in the ongoing serial, contributing to the broader narrative tapestry of a period where DC pushed the limits of its core legacy characters.
