Where it came from
Battle Chasers #1 was published in April 1998 by Image Comics, marking the debut of a high-fantasy series created by artist Joe Madureira. Born out of the creator's departure from Marvel Comics, the series was designed to blend the aesthetics of American superhero comics with the visual sensibilities of Japanese manga and role-playing games, a synthesis that felt fresh and distinct within the late 1990s comic market.
The visual language of the book was heavily influenced by Madureira's interest in anime, featuring exaggerated character proportions, dynamic action sequences, and vibrant, detailed environments. While the series gained a dedicated cult following for its unique fusion of genres and high-quality production, it was also widely noted for its irregular release schedule, which became a significant aspect of its legacy as the series moved between publishers over the following decades.
