Where it came from
Big Comic Zōkan is a long-running seasonal special edition magazine published by Shogakukan, serving as a companion to the core Big Comic line. These editions were established to provide a space for experimental short stories, thematic anthologies, and extended narratives from both veteran and emerging manga artists, catering to a demographic of mature, working-class men interested in seinen manga.
The design and editorial direction of these issues prioritize high-quality illustration and grounded storytelling, often featuring covers by iconic artists like Rumiko Takahashi or Mitsuru Adachi. Issue #723, like others in the series, maintains the signature sophisticated, understated aesthetic of the brand, which has remained largely consistent since the publication's inception to signify reliability and literary merit to its loyal readership.
