Where it came from
Big Comic Zōkan is a long-running Japanese seinen manga anthology published by Shogakukan, designed as a supplemental offshoot to the main Big Comic magazine. It emerged during a golden era for adult-oriented manga, providing a venue for established mangaka to experiment with thematic short stories, historical dramas, and mature narratives that catered to an older, educated demographic of salarymen and manga enthusiasts.
The publication is characterized by its distinct cover aesthetic, which frequently features commissioned, high-quality portraiture or illustrative scenes often associated with top-tier manga artists. Issue 962 continues the legacy of the series' editorial commitment to blending serialized content with high-concept episodic storytelling, maintaining the design identity that has defined Shogakukan's output for decades through careful curating of both narrative tone and visual presentation.
