Where it came from
Black Orchid #12 represents the conclusion of the 1988-1989 limited series written by Neil Gaiman and illustrated by Dave McKean. This project was a significant departure from mainstream comic tropes at the time, tasked by DC Comics with re-envisioning the obscure character of Susan Linden-Thorne. Gaiman and McKean utilized a sophisticated, painterly aesthetic that moved away from traditional panel structures, reflecting a broader trend in late 1980s comics toward more literary, experimental storytelling.
The series served as a cornerstone for the emergence of the Vertigo imprint, exploring themes of identity, ecology, and metamorphosis. McKean’s design, characterized by mixed-media collages and surrealist tones, was intended to evoke a dreamlike, grounded atmosphere that challenged the prevailing superhero conventions of the era. Upon its release, the conclusion was noted for its introspective narrative tone and remains highly regarded for establishing a new visual vocabulary for character-driven graphic fiction.
