Bruno Brazil #9

Bruno Brazil, a seminal Franco-Belgian spy series, was created in 1967 by writer Greg—the pseudonym for Michel Regnier—and artist William Vance. The series emerged during a golden age of European adventure comics, designed to provide a gritty, cinematic alternative to the more whimsical comic strips of the time. The title character, a secret agent for the Commando Caïman, reflected the era's fascination with Cold War intrigue and high-stakes international espionage.

Issue number 9, often titled 'La cité des crânes,' serves as a testament to William Vance’s mastery of realistic, detail-oriented draftsmanship. Vance sought to evoke a sense of palpable danger and professional discipline in his illustrations, utilizing a clean, ligne claire-adjacent style that remained grounded in traditional illustrative techniques. Upon its release, the series was well-regarded by readers and critics alike for its mature tone, narrative pacing, and technical visual precision, cementing its place as a cornerstone of the Franco-Belgian adventure canon.
