Buck Godot - Zap Gun For Hire #2

Buck Godot: Zap Gun For Hire #2 was published in 1987 as part of a four-issue limited series created by Phil Foglio. Emerging during the height of the independent comics movement in the mid-1980s, the series functioned as a satirical space opera. Foglio, already well-regarded for his humorous illustrative style and work on other projects like What's New with Phil & Dixie, sought to deconstruct the tropes of science fiction pulp adventures through a blend of witty dialogue and stylized, energetic artwork.

The character of Buck Godot is a cynical, world-weary mercenary operating in a universe characterized by bureaucracy and absurdity. In this second issue, Foglio continues to flesh out the eccentricities of the setting, maintaining a lighthearted tone that contrasted with the increasingly grim direction of mainstream superhero comics at the time. The series is remembered by collectors as a quintessential example of late 80s indie humor, appreciated for Foglio’s distinct ability to balance visual slapstick with sharp, self-aware narrative tropes.
