Cable #4

Cable number 4, published in 1993, arrived during the height of the 1990s comic book speculator boom. Written by Fabian Nicieza with art by Art Thibert and pencils by David DeVries, this issue serves as part of an early arc that sought to flesh out the complex, time-traveling origin of the character Nathan Summers. It is a quintessential artifact of the era's aesthetic, defined by heavy ink lines and the intense, gritty atmosphere that characterized the X-Men offshoot titles of the early nineties.

The issue is historically significant for its role in cementing Cable as a central figure in the Marvel Universe, moving him away from his initial portrayal as a simple mercenary toward the more nuanced, messianic figure depicted in later storylines. While the title was heavily marketed as a flagship series, the series as a whole remains a distinct time capsule of the post-Rob Liefeld creative direction, reflecting a concerted effort by Marvel editorial to ground the character's narrative amidst the chaotic continuity of the period.
