Where it came from
Cable #44 was published in August 1997 as part of the X-Men family of titles during a period when the character Cable, created by Louise Simonson and Rob Liefeld, was undergoing significant creative shifts. This specific issue falls within the run scripted by Joe Casey with interior art by Jose Ladronn, whose distinct, highly detailed aesthetic moved away from the traditional 1990s comic book style toward a more surreal and anatomically stylized approach.
The narrative arc surrounding this time often explored Nathan Summers' complex origins and his struggle to control the techno-organic virus consuming his body. Ladronn's tenure on the series is frequently cited by collectors for its idiosyncratic visual language, which aimed to bring a more cinematic and imaginative scope to the character's journey, marking a departure from the grittier, hyper-muscular imagery that defined the character’s earlier appearances in the early 1990s.
