Calexit: Say Goodbye to Hollywood #1

Calexit: Say Goodbye to Hollywood #1, released in 2018, serves as a direct follow-up to the original Black Mask Studios miniseries written by Matteo Pizzolo and illustrated by Amilcar Pinna. The narrative picks up in the aftermath of a speculative near-future scenario where California has seceded from the United States, placing the story against a backdrop of geopolitical instability and internal social conflict. The series was designed to explore themes of political tribalism and urban resistance, continuing the gritty, punk-inspired aesthetic established in the preceding volumes.

The creative team focused on a visual style that emphasizes the harsh reality of an occupied Los Angeles, utilizing Pinna’s sharp line work to distinguish between the various factions warring for control of the state. Upon its release, the issue was received as a continuation of the creators' ongoing critique of contemporary American political polarization. It remains a notable example of modern independent comic book publishing, specifically within the realm of speculative fiction that mirrors real-world sociopolitical anxieties.
