Calexit: The Battle of Universal City #3

Calexit: The Battle of Universal City is a limited series published by Black Mask Studios, functioning as a direct sequel to the original Calexit series. Debuting in 2019, the title emerged during a period of heightened political polarization in the United States, utilizing the concept of California’s secession as a backdrop for a gritty, grounded exploration of resistance movements and social upheaval. The series was created by writer Matteo Pizzolo and artist Amilcar Pinna, who sought to blend near-future speculative fiction with the aesthetics of political thrillers and street-level activism.

The visual direction of the series, driven by Pinna’s sharp line work and gritty color palettes, was intended to reflect the frantic, high-stakes nature of the characters' struggle within a fractured society. Issue #3 continues the story arc following the residents of Los Angeles as they navigate the complexities of power dynamics within the occupied city. Upon release, the series received attention for its provocative premise and its commitment to depicting the messy, unglamorous realities of urban insurgency, finding a dedicated audience among readers interested in political satire and dystopian narratives.
