Captain America #164

Published in August 1973, Captain America #164 serves as a significant installment in the 'Secret Empire' story arc. During this era, writers and editors at Marvel often used the series to reflect the anxieties of the contemporary American political landscape, specifically echoing the disillusionment surrounding the Watergate scandal. This narrative direction helped transition the character from a simple symbol of patriotism into a more complex figure grappling with institutional corruption.

The issue features artwork by Sal Buscema, a prolific artist whose grounded, kinetic style defined the look of the series throughout the mid-1970s. Working under the editorial guidance of Roy Thomas, the creative team focused on blending high-stakes superhero adventure with political thriller elements. The issue is remembered by collectors for its contribution to the slow-burn mystery of the Secret Empire, a storyline that would culminate in a major character shift for Steve Rogers.
