Captain America #29

Captain America #29, published in 1973 by Marvel Comics, emerged during the 'Secret Empire' story arc, a pivotal narrative thread penned by Steve Englehart. This period of the series famously reflected the political disillusionment of the United States in the early 1970s, as the story mirrored the real-world anxieties surrounding the Watergate scandal. The narrative follows Captain America as he grapples with the corruption of government institutions, ultimately leading to Steve Rogers temporarily abandoning his identity to become Nomad.

The interior art for this issue was provided by Sal Buscema, a mainstay of Marvel during the Bronze Age whose dynamic, workmanlike style defined the visual identity of the title for years. The cover, illustrated by John Romita Sr., captures the tense, conspiratorial atmosphere that characterized Englehart's run. Upon its release, the issue was well-received for its willingness to integrate contemporary social commentary into superhero fiction, marking a transition toward more mature, morally ambiguous storytelling within the medium.
