Captain America #337

Captain America #337 was published by Marvel Comics in January 1988, landing in the middle of Mark Gruenwald’s legendary, decade-long run as the series writer. This issue specifically features the aftermath of Steve Rogers' decision to abandon his mantle after a dispute with the U.S. government, leading to the introduction of John Walker as the new Captain America. The narrative focus on the burden of the shield and the political complexities of the character solidified Gruenwald’s reputation for deep, character-driven storytelling.

The interior artwork was provided by Tom Morgan, whose clean, dynamic lines were a staple of the series during this era. The striking cover, illustrated by Mike Zeck, highlights the tension inherent in the changing of the guard. It remains a significant issue for collectors because it captures a pivotal transition in Marvel history, reflecting the broader 1980s trend of deconstructing classic superheroes to explore the implications of national identity and public oversight.
