Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers #1

Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers #1 was published in 1981 by Pacific Comics, representing a significant moment in the evolution of the independent comic book industry. Created by the legendary Jack Kirby, this series was notable for being one of the first major superhero titles released by a publisher outside of the established Marvel and DC duopoly. The project was conceived as a space opera, utilizing discarded concepts and character designs Kirby had developed over his long career, reflecting his signature dynamic layouts and cosmic storytelling scale.

The design and narrative vision were entirely helmed by Kirby, who sought to leverage the creative freedom offered by the emerging direct-market distribution model. By bypassing the restrictive Comics Code Authority, Pacific Comics allowed Kirby to maintain ownership of his creations, which served as a landmark shift for creator rights. The series was well-received by fans of Kirby's iconic style, cementing his reputation as a master of the medium and setting a precedent for the creator-owned comic movement that would flourish throughout the 1980s.
