Cerebus Trade Paperbacks #1

Cerebus the Aardvark began as a monthly self-published comic book in 1977, created by Dave Sim. As the series gained a cult following, Sim decided to collect the early, out-of-print issues into trade paperback volumes to ensure new readers could access the sprawling narrative from the beginning. The first volume, titled simply Cerebus, was released in 1981, compiling the initial twenty-five issues of the series.

Sim utilized a stark, monochromatic aesthetic that evolved from simple gag-strip origins into dense, illustrative storytelling. The design of the trade paperback was intentionally utilitarian, intended to serve as a library-style archive of the ongoing saga. While Sim’s later work became a subject of significant controversy due to his personal views, the early collections remain recognized as a milestone in the history of independent publishing and the long-form graphic novel medium.
