Where it came from
Published in 1948 by Prize Comics, Charlie Chan #2 represents the post-war resurgence of the iconic detective character created by Earl Derr Bigger. During this period, the comic book industry sought to capitalize on the enduring popularity of the Charlie Chan radio dramas and motion pictures, adapting the character’s deductive prowess into the visual medium of serialized pulp art.
The interior illustrations and cover art were produced by the staff at Prize Comics, following the established visual conventions of mid-century detective fiction. The series aimed to translate Chan’s signature aphorisms and methodical investigation style into a comic format, though it faced challenges in balancing the character’s complex literary history with the fast-paced, action-oriented expectations of the late 1940s comic book audience.
