Checkmate #33

Checkmate #33 was published in 1990 as part of the long-running DC Comics espionage series. The title focused on a high-stakes intelligence agency operating within the DC Universe, blending superhero tropes with the gritty, clandestine atmosphere of cold war-era spy fiction. This specific issue arrived during a period where the series was increasingly emphasizing tactical operations and the complex interpersonal dynamics of its task-force members.

The creative direction for the series during this era was spearheaded by writers like Paul Kupperberg and artists who leaned into the dark, detailed aesthetic common to late eighties and early nineties comics. The design sought to distinguish the title from mainstream caped-hero books by prioritizing shadow, intrigue, and grounded human conflict, which earned it a dedicated following among readers who favored serialized, plot-heavy narratives over standalone superhero adventures.
