Cheval Noir #48

Cheval Noir was a landmark anthology series published by Dark Horse Comics between 1989 and 1994, designed specifically to bridge the gap between European bandes dessinées and American readers. Issue #48, released in 1993, captures the late-stage mission of the series, which focused on translating high-quality, mature-themed international talent for the domestic market. By curating works from creators like Jean Giraud (Moebius) and Enki Bilal, Dark Horse sought to establish a sophisticated alternative to the superhero-dominated landscape of the early 90s.

The design and editorial direction were spearheaded by Randy Stradley and the Dark Horse team, who prioritized a high-production, prestige-format aesthetic. Issue #48 reflects this commitment to visual storytelling, featuring a diverse array of serialized narratives that emphasized illustration as much as the written script. While the series was widely lauded by critics for its artistic audacity and for introducing North American audiences to the European masters, it eventually ceased publication as the direct market shifted toward more serialized, single-character comic book formats.
