Where it came from
Cheval Noir was a long-running anthology series published by Dark Horse Comics beginning in 1989. Designed as a bridge between the American market and European bandes dessinées, it aimed to introduce readers in the United States to prominent international creators whose works were rarely translated at the time. Issue number 44, released in the early 1990s, fits within this mission by featuring a diverse array of serialized stories, typically including a mix of science fiction, fantasy, and noir sensibilities.
The editorial direction for Cheval Noir prioritized high-quality artistic presentation, often showcasing the detailed linework and unique storytelling structures characteristic of European graphic novels. The anthology served as a critical platform for authors and illustrators such as Moebius, Enki Bilal, and Milo Manara. Issue 44 reflects the series' commitment to this sophisticated aesthetic, functioning as both an experimental vehicle for international talent and a curated showcase for readers looking beyond the traditional superhero paradigm of the American comic industry.
