Classic X-Men #12

Classic X-Men #12 was published in August 1987 as part of a Marvel Comics reprint series designed to provide context for the X-Men's history while offering new narrative material. This particular issue reprints the story from X-Men #106, originally published in 1977, which featured the team battling against Magneto and the Shi'ar Empire. The reprint series was highly regarded by fans for its inclusion of supplemental back-up stories that expanded upon earlier character developments and plot points, serving as a bridge between the classic era and the modern readership of the late 1980s.

The additional content for this issue features art by John Bolton, a British illustrator known for his distinct, painterly style that departed from the traditional house style of superhero comics. Bolton's work was specifically commissioned to provide a moody, atmospheric aesthetic for these back-up features, which often explored the internal lives of the mutants. The reception of these added vignettes was generally positive, as they offered a level of artistic depth and psychological nuance that helped solidify the reputation of the Classic X-Men series as a essential companion to the main run.
