Where it came from
Classic X-Men #17 was published in January 1988 as part of a Marvel Comics series designed to reprint landmark issues of the Uncanny X-Men alongside new supplemental material. This specific issue features a reprint of Uncanny X-Men #116, which was originally released in 1978 and depicts the X-Men’s dramatic confrontation with the Shi'ar Imperial Guard in the M'Kraan Crystal saga.
The reprint is notable for its new cover art and a backup story illustrated by John Bolton. Bolton, known for his lush, painterly, and detailed style, provided a unique visual tone that contrasted with the standard comic book aesthetics of the era. The supplemental content served to deepen the lore surrounding the team, providing context that fans of the original Claremont-Byrne run found essential for understanding the broader cosmic scale of the X-Men's history.
