Where it came from
Classic X-Men #25 was published by Marvel Comics in September 1988 as part of a series dedicated to reprinting early X-Men stories with updated framing sequences and new cover art. The issue serves as a significant installment in the series because it reprints the iconic Uncanny X-Men #117, which provides a pivotal look into the origin of Professor Charles Xavier's relationship with the Shadow King in Cairo.
The new cover art for this issue was created by John Bolton, a British illustrator renowned for his distinctively lush and painterly style. Bolton’s approach was a deliberate departure from the typical house style of superhero comics at the time, aiming for a more atmospheric and psychologically complex portrayal of the characters. The cover was well-received by fans and critics alike, marking a highlight in the series' efforts to elevate the presentation of classic stories for contemporary readers.
