Where it came from
Commando comics were launched by D.C. Thomson & Co. in 1961 as a pocket-sized, black-and-white digest series focused on military adventure. The Braddock of Bomber Command series followed Colonel Matthew Braddock, a gritty and uncompromising RAF pilot, as he navigated the aerial conflicts of World War II. These stories were a staple of British boys' adventure fiction, designed to be inexpensive, portable, and thrilling to read during travel or leisure.
The character of Braddock was famously illustrated by Ken Barr, whose dynamic, high-contrast style defined the look of the series. The narrative focused on themes of bravery and tactical ingenuity, stripping away the romance of war to highlight the mechanical and visceral nature of aerial combat. While the series was often seen as disposable entertainment at the time, it is now widely celebrated by comic historians for its consistency, technical accuracy regarding aircraft, and its significant impact on the landscape of British post-war illustrated storytelling.
