Where it came from
Dark Oz, published by Caliber Comics in the early 1990s, emerged during a period of intense experimentation in the independent comic book industry, where creators frequently sought to reinterpret classic literature through gritty, modern lenses. The series was designed to deconstruct L. Frank Baum's iconic world, offering a subversive and mature take on the mythos of Oz that aligned with the prevailing trend of dark fantasy and psychological horror comics popular at the time.
The creative direction for the series focused on shifting the whimsical tone of the original texts into something more unsettling and visceral. While the series remains a niche artifact of the independent boom, it serves as a representative example of how small-press publishers utilized public domain properties to explore aesthetic boundaries in sequential art, reflecting the broader industry movement toward creator-driven reinterpretations of established cultural staples.
