Dark Oz #4

Dark Oz, published by Arrow Comics in the early 1990s, was a dark fantasy reimagining of L. Frank Baum’s classic world. The series emerged during a period of comic industry trends where publishers frequently revisited public domain children’s literature, casting them in gritty, adult-oriented aesthetics. This issue continues the series' attempt to subvert the whimsy of the original narratives by introducing darker, more mature themes and revised characterizations.

The series is often cited as a product of its era’s enthusiasm for 'grim and gritty' reinventions. While the art and narrative choices aimed to provide a jarring contrast to the source material, the series ultimately remains a niche entry in 1990s independent comics. It serves as a curiosity for collectors interested in the experimental and often polarizing interpretations of classic folklore that proliferated in the small-press market of the time.
