Where it came from
Das grosse Buch der kurzen Geschichten von Clever & Smart #1 was published as part of a series intended to repackage the popular Spanish comic characters Mortadelo y Filemón—known as Clever & Smart in German-speaking territories—for a dedicated anthology format. Created by Francisco Ibáñez, these characters were originally conceived in 1958 as a satirical response to traditional detective tropes, featuring two clumsy agents from the T.I.A. who frequently caused more chaos than they resolved.
The series design prioritized accessibility, collecting disparate short stories that had appeared in various periodicals into a more permanent, substantial hardcover format. Ibáñez’s signature slapstick style, characterized by dense, fast-paced panels and intricate visual gags, translated successfully to the German market, where the series became a cornerstone of comedic European comics. The anthology format was received as a convenient way for readers to experience the longevity and recurring humor of the T.I.A. dynamic.
