DC Finest: Deadman: How Many Times Can a Guy Die? #1

Released as part of the DC Finest trade paperback initiative, this volume serves as a comprehensive retrospective collection of the early appearances of Deadman, the spectral character created by writer Arnold Drake and artist Carmine Infantino. Debuting in Strange Adventures in 1967, the character was conceived during a period of experimentation within DC Comics as the company sought to move toward more complex, emotionally resonant narratives that departed from the standard superhero tropes of the era.

The aesthetic of the original run, largely defined by the innovative layouts and atmospheric pencil work of Neal Adams, marked a turning point in comic book storytelling. These stories were received at the time as a radical departure in visual style and thematic depth, earning critical acclaim for their haunting, supernatural exploration of life and mortality. This collection gathers those foundational stories, offering contemporary readers a curated look at the legacy of a character who remains a singular figure in the DC pantheon.
